Our Mission

Driving Sustainable Change Across New Zealand’s Catchment Communities

At ANZCC, our mission is to champion sustainable land and water management through collaboration, innovation, and local leadership. We bring together catchment communities across New Zealand to drive meaningful change for future generations.

OUR STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

Partner for success

Catchment groups are recognised as an informed and integral part of a sustainable future and are well supported by local and central government policy and investment.

  • Advocate at central government for support of catchment communities through policy and investment.

  • Support and encourage catchment groups at local government level.

  • Advocate for catchment groups to play an integral role in the planning process.

  • Support industry to connect with catchment groups.

Advocate for investment

Catchment communities have enduring resourcing– operational and/or project – to deliver positive impact for their catchment.

  • Accelerate investment in catchment communities.

  • Advocate streamlined reporting requirements for catchment groups

  • Advocate for funding solutions for major projects with community that fairly distribute costs and benefits across stakeholders.

Communicate impact

The positive impact of catchment groups is recognised nationally.

  • Communicate impact of catchment groups at a national level.

  • Share stories and case studies.

Support knowledge and capability

Communities are connected to knowledge and the capability to deliver a positive impact for their catchments.

  • Provide a forum for knowledge exchange between catchment groups to support the efficient utilisation of funds to deliver a positive impact.

  • Promote on the ground science solutions for catchments.

Why We’re Here

We live in a time of constant environmental disruption, which we witness firsthand in our catchments. The future of our communities, their prosperity, and environmental vibrancy hinges on taking swift and informed action. By efficiently using our resources and applying new knowledge and technology, we can drive meaningful change. Our expanding network is proof that our approach works, and now, more than ever, we must sustain this momentum to protect the future for generations to come.

Urgent Action

Perpetual Disruption

Agri-food and fibre producers and our network operate in a world where disruption is normal. This includes:

  • Global warming

  • Rapidly changing weather patterns (where species thrive)

  • Biodiversity and species risks and threats

  • Increased and more severe weather events

  • Increased population and demand for food

  • Geopolitical, ecological, food production & supply disruptions

Contributions

Agri-food and fibre sector changes to respond to disruption builds on a strong foundation.

  • Our land: 11m ha farmed (excludes tussock). 27m ha  protected

  • Resources: Carbon sinks above and below ground, topsoil and temperate climate enabling efficient supply of  healthy food low emission per tonne of food

  • Prosperity: Agri-food production for 21 billion meals, $57b of revenue, $48b exports and 227,000 jobs for the 1.9 people in rural New Zealand

Threats and risks

The status quo is not an option. Threats, risks and disruption  impacts, are increasing.

  • Living species: Biodiversity threats are increasing with many of our indigenous birds, fish, plants and invertebrate species in decline. Risks are magnified by pest species, monoculture plants and land practices

  • Weather: Increasing drought, fire, flood events and losses of soil

  • Emission: 38 MT CO2-e with a ETS value of $2.3b

  • Our people and communities: Disruptions threaten the prosperity and vibrancy of our rural communities

Restoration action

The network of 200+ catchment groups is increasing and enabling action.

  • Ground up: Catchment groups have grown from the ground up. The numbers are rising with 200+ established groups.

  • Reach: Catchment groups connect to >80% of the land. The diversity of groups aligns with their place and purpose

  • Delivery: Farms and communities  in the network invest in change. A connected network allows them to go faster and do more. The network has the capability and capacity to do more
